Introduction

The brief was to make a wearable object, as well as design a desktop object.

For this project I decided to design a fidget ring as a wearable object and a coaster holder for the desktop object. This was my first project as a university design student and me a chance to understand the studio and how to use some basic machinery.

I also made 5 zines to help me start to think about what is important to me as a designer.

Pictures that Inspired Me in the HS2 Project

Original route for HS2

The original plan for the HS2 project was to help link the North with the South. However, during roughly 10 years since it was first suggested, the route has been reduced to connecting Birmingham and London.

Destruction of countryside

This map is showing amount of countryside that is being taken an area of North-west London, near where I live. The pink shows the working sites. There are many more examples like this.

HS2 Worker

This image shows a HS2 worker standing on a trunk that likely used to be an ancient tree.

Scarring of landscape

This is a birds eye view showing some of the harm that some of the HS2 sites are doing to the countryside. The majority of this land would have previously been farmland.

Nature being moved away

Again this was taken near where I live. The vehicles has churned up the mud of what was once grass. You can hardly see a deer that is standing in the mud that likely has been forced to move elsewhere.

White Elephant

The project HS2 has been described as many as a white elephant, this is defined as a burdensome asset whose cost of upkeep is not in line with its usefulness or value. Activist have adopted this an a symbol against HS2.

A Single Tree

An oak tree stands alone surrounded by churned up mud. The reason that it has not been taken down is because it is a protected tree. This symbolism was a big inspiration for this project.

Newspaper Editorial

This was also a big inspiration for me. The idea that the government treat the HS2 project as a toy.
